Hands roam and breath is supposed to catch but all that does are my fingers on his clothes. Tongues flick and stars are supposed to spark but all that does is discomfort in my chest. He gasps but my breath remains steady and I wonder what is wrong. I feel panic on the edges of my skin and see the past in the sides of my vision but all he sees is me and I wonder why I’m broken. He says he loves me and I whisper it back in privacy, comfort, and rarity and I wonder if I mean it because what is love anyway. He was beautiful. But he paled in her presence for he feared her. “You mustn’t love me,” she says, “for anyone who loves me fails me.” He fears the failure and yet he loves her. There was a siren call when they met and it hadn’t stopped; there was a ringing in his ears when he got close to her and yet he drowns in it, begs for more. She opens her mouth to curse him and he bathes in it. She questions him and he answers with words ready on the tongue, soothing and consoling, hands reaching out to calm the ripples of worry.
